When I started Kardia 11 years ago, my vision was clear: I wanted more than a fitness space—I wanted a place where people could move, grow, connect, and feel at home. A place where we’d celebrate each other’s milestones, whether big or small, and where every single person felt they belonged. As I look back, this journey has been filled with incredible friendships, growth, and moments I’ll never forget.
Starting as a run club meeting at Spadina and Fort York, then hosting massive yoga events at Canoe Landing Park, and finally opening our own studio seven years ago, here are the 11 most powerful lessons I’ve learned along the way.
1. Community is Everything
Community isn’t just a word we throw around—it’s the heart of Kardia. From those early days with the run club, I saw how powerful a sense of belonging can be. Watching people come together to reach goals, support each other, and form real friendships has been beyond rewarding.
2. Embrace Every Step of Growth
Kardia’s journey hasn’t been linear. Like everyone, we’ve faced setbacks—remember those four years of pandemic closures? Our industry was one of the last to reopen. But by embracing every change, whether it was running outdoor yoga sessions or finally opening our studio, each step moved us closer to our vision. Every challenge helped shape who we are today.
3. Self-Care is Non-Negotiable
I’ve learned over time that self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s essential. This goes not just for me but for everyone who walks through Kardia’s doors. Taking breaks, listening to our bodies, practicing gratitude—these are pillars of the Kardia experience. We’re committed to supporting our community in making time for themselves, whether that’s through a peaceful Meditate and Restore class or a high-energy Tabata Spin session.
4. Listen to Feedback
Listening to our community has been key to Kardia’s growth. We’re constantly adjusting our class schedule, adding new themes, and responding to what our members need. Being open to feedback and evolving based on it has kept Kardia fresh, dynamic, and inviting.
5. Local Partnerships Enrich Our Community
Collaborating with local businesses has been one of the best decisions we’ve made. Partnerships allow us to give back, support other entrepreneurs, and bring unique experiences to our members. From Dock Yoga at the Art and Water Culture dock to Overpass Yoga on Lakeshore, these events create memorable connections for us all.
6. Creating a Welcoming Environment Takes Intention
At Kardia, making everyone feel welcome is at the heart of what we do. We’ve been intentional about creating a space that’s gender-free with single washrooms, showers, and change stalls, along with free mat and cycling shoe rentals. Building a team that shares this vision has helped make Kardia a place where everyone—from beginners to seasoned athletes—feels like they belong.
7. Technology Can Strengthen Community
Our metric-driven spin classes, Sound Off headphones for outdoor sessions, and our new booking app have been game-changers. Tech like this adds a whole new layer to the Kardia experience, allowing our members to track progress and stay connected to their fitness journey. When tech is thoughtfully integrated, it can actually enhance connection.
8. Consistency Builds Trust
Being there, class after class, year after year, has been so important in building trust. People know that Kardia is a reliable place to come back to, not just for a workout but for a supportive, welcoming environment. Consistency has built a foundation of trust that I’m so proud of.
9. Celebrate Milestones, Big and Small
Kardia’s 11th anniversary is a huge milestone, but it’s just one of many we celebrate. From personal bests to attendance milestones and our seasonal challenges, every victory is meaningful here. These moments keep us connected and remind us of the journey we’re all on together.
10. Never Lose Sight of Your Why
Through all the ups and downs, it’s been essential to remember why I started Kardia: to create a community through fitness where people feel connected, empowered, and can find joy in movement. That “why” has guided every decision, every new idea, and every challenge we’ve faced.
11. The Power of Gratitude
If there’s one thing that’s kept me grounded, it’s gratitude. I’m so grateful every day for our Kardia community, the instructors who pour their heart into every class, and every single person who chooses to spend their time with us. Leading with gratitude has reminded me of why I love what I do and why Kardia exists.
As we celebrate 11 years, I’m filled with thanks for the incredible community we’ve built together. Here’s to more years of growth, connection, and strength—thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey. You’ve truly made Kardia what it is today.
